How Plumbers Get Leads From Google Maps and AI Search

How Plumbers Get Leads From Google Maps and AI Search

Key takeaways

  • Finish the profile properly before anything clever: categories, services, products, photos and posts.
  • Coverage beats optimisation once one profile is maxed out, because proximity caps what it can reach.
  • AI answers are pulled from "best of" lists as much as from your own site.
  • A booking link on missed calls moved one plumber's lead-to-close rate from 25% to 35% with no extra marketing.

Most plumbing marketing advice stops at "fill in your Google profile". That is the first ten percent. The businesses pulling six figures a quarter out of search are doing five more things, and two of them did not exist as tactics three years ago.

This sequence added $251,909 in booked revenue for one plumbing business in under 90 days, tracked by service and by suburb, with no paid ads and no bought leads. The full breakdown is in the video.

Start with the map profile, and finish it

The map pack is still where most of a plumber's calls come from. A profile carrying only the legal entity cannot be matched to someone typing "plumber near me", so the main service and the location belong in the registered trading name, with a DBA filed first so the change is legitimate.

Then finish the listing, which almost nobody does:

  • Categories. Read which primary and secondary categories the plumbers ranking above you use, and match the ones that genuinely apply.
  • Services. Almost always left blank. Every service you offer, with a real description naming the service and the city.
  • Products. Your main services as products with custom thumbnails, so the profile looks branded rather than default.
  • Photos. Real trucks with signage, real crews, finished work. Not stock, not AI images.
  • Posts. Two or three a week. It does not move rankings much, it makes the profile look alive to whoever is reading it.

Then review velocity, from the customers you already have

Two years of past customers into an email and text drip campaign, asking for reviews that mention the service and the suburb. Velocity is the fastest thing you can change on a profile, and a steady stream of recent, specific reviews reads as a business that is actually working. There is more on how to ask in how to get more Google reviews without being pushy.

Coverage, once one profile is maxed out

A single listing reaches a radius, not a city. Opening profiles in the suburbs you genuinely service, each built out the same way and each supported with reviews from customers in that area, is what turns one corner of a metro into real coverage. Done properly, those profiles can reach the top of their own areas quickly.

Get named in AI answers

People are asking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity who the best plumber in their city is, and whoever gets named gets the call. Those leads convert several times better than average, because the AI has effectively pre-vetted you.

AI does not rank the way Maps does. It retrieves, scanning everywhere your business is mentioned: the map pack, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Reddit, YouTube, blogs. In practice the answers lean heavily on "best of" list articles, so the work is making sure those lists exist, are accurate, and include you.

Catch the calls you are already missing

Getting the phone to ring is half the job. A plumber on the tools misses calls, and a missed call is a customer ringing the next business on the list. A booking link sent automatically on a missed call, one that captures the address, name and service and drops it into the job management system, moved one client's lead-to-close rate from 25% to 35% with no extra marketing at all.

Track it in one place

Accounting, job management and call tracking plugged together, so you can see revenue by source, which services make the most, close rate, and which profiles and pages produced the leads. Without that, every decision about where to spend next is a guess.

The same sequence is what our local SEO service runs, with the trade-specific version on the plumbing SEO pages.
