Key takeaways
- AI retrieves mentions from across the web rather than ranking pages, so spread of mentions beats one strong page.
- Pick 10 to 15 high value questions to be recommended for, not a hundred that bring price shoppers.
- Split the list into nurture questions and conversion questions, and build for both.
- The People Also Ask box is the fastest way to build the real question list.
A growing share of "find me a plumber" searches are not happening on Google Maps at all. People are asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, and whichever businesses get named are taking work that used to go to whoever ranked first in the map pack.
Across 12 local service businesses this produced $1.4 million in attributed revenue in a year, with no paid ads. The first client was a roofer with $120,000 inside 90 days. The full sequence is in the video.
AI retrieves, it does not rank
This is the part that changes the work. Google ranks pages. AI pulls every mention of your business it can find across the internet and assembles an answer from them.
Twenty mentions spread across Reddit, the map pack, the Better Business Bureau, press coverage, question threads and blog pages will beat a single excellent website every time. If all you have is a site and a Google profile, there is not enough for an AI to justify recommending you over a business it has seen in ten different places.
Step one: decide what you want to be recommended for
Most businesses want to be recommended for everything, and end up being named in answers that bring price shoppers who waste the office's time. Ten to fifteen high quality questions are worth more than a hundred random ones.
Sort them into two buckets:
- Nurture. Broad questions from someone who will buy in a month or two: how a tankless water heater works, the difference between tank and tankless. They do not ring the phone this week, they keep you in the frame when the buyer is ready.
- Conversion. Questions from someone ready to spend: the best plumber in a city, how long an install takes, what emergency drain unblocking costs. Whoever gets named in those answers gets the call.
Step two: build the question list from real searches
Type your broad service term into Google and scroll to the People Also Ask box. Each question you open reveals four or five more. Pull twenty of them into a document using the exact phrasing people use, because that is what the AI systems are matching against.
That list is the brief for everything after it: what gets written, where mentions need to exist, and which questions you are trying to own the answer to.
Why the conversion questions are worth the most
Leads that arrive through an AI recommendation convert several times better than average, because the customer has effectively been handed a referral rather than a list of ten options to compare.
How this fits with the map pack
It does not replace local SEO, it stacks on top of it. The profile, the reviews and the suburb pages are what make you a credible answer in the first place, and the AI work makes sure you are the name that comes back when someone asks a machine instead of opening Maps.
If you want both running together, that is what our local SEO service does, city by city across the services pages.
