Google Business Profile Suspended? How to Get It Reinstated

Google Business Profile Suspended? How to Get It Reinstated

Key takeaways

  • Google gives you two self-service appeal attempts, so the first one has to carry your best evidence rather than being a quick try.
  • Once the evidence form opens you have 60 minutes to attach everything, so gather the documents before you start.
  • Google asks for official business registration, a licence, tax certificates or utility bills. In New Zealand that means your Companies Office record, NZBN, GST registration, PGDB or LBP licence and a power or phone bill in the business name.
  • The business name and address on every document has to match the profile exactly, which is the single most common reason an appeal is rejected.

A Google Business Profile is suspended when Google decides it does not follow the Business Profile guidelines, and the fix is an appeal through the Google Business Profile appeals tool with documents proving the business trades under that name at that address. Google's own wording is that it "may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don't follow our guidelines". You get two self-service attempts, so the first appeal needs to be the good one.

For a trade business this is not a minor admin problem. The profile is usually the single largest source of calls, and a suspension turns that off entirely while you wait.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?

Almost always because something on the profile stopped matching the real world, or changed in a way that looked like manipulation. The usual causes, in the order we see them:

  • A keyword-stuffed business name. Adding a service and a suburb to a name you genuinely trade under is one thing. Stacking three services and four suburbs is what triggers a review.
  • An address you cannot prove. A virtual office, a mailbox, a home address you have hidden, or premises nobody staffs.
  • Editing several core fields at once. Changing name, address and category in the same week reads as a different business.
  • A competitor report. Anyone can flag a profile, and in competitive trades they do.
  • The category not matching the business, or a service-area business showing a street address it should not.

What is the difference between a soft and a hard suspension?

A soft suspension means the profile is still on Maps for customers but you have lost management access: you cannot edit it, post, or reply to reviews. A hard suspension means the profile is gone from Search and Maps altogether. Google's help pages use suspended and disabled fairly interchangeably, so the practical test is simply whether customers can still find you or not.

The distinction matters because a soft suspension is the warning shot. If you can still be found, you have time to fix whatever is wrong before it escalates, and that is the cheapest moment to act.

How do I appeal a Google Business Profile suspension?

  1. Fix the underlying problem first. Appealing while the name is still stuffed or the address is still unverifiable just burns one of your two attempts.
  2. Gather every document before you open the form. Once the evidence step opens you have 60 minutes to attach everything, and anything submitted after that is not attached to the appeal.
  3. Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool, signed in to the account that manages the profile, and select the profile.
  4. Attach documents whose business name and address match the profile character for character.
  5. Submit once, then wait. Google says it will review and email a decision, and does not publish a timeline. Submitting a second appeal while the first is open does not speed anything up.

What documents does Google accept in New Zealand?

Google asks for official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates or utility bills for the business. Those are American categories, and the New Zealand equivalents are not always obvious, so this is the mapping we use.

What Google asks forThe New Zealand equivalentWhere to get it
Official business registrationCertificate of incorporation, or your NZBN record showing the trading nameCompanies Office / NZBN Register
A business licencePGDB registration for plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers, or your LBP card for building tradespgdb.co.nz or lbp.govt.nz
Tax certificateGST registration confirmation, or an IRD letter showing the business namemyIR
Utility bill for the businessPower, phone or internet account in the business name at the profile addressYour provider's billing portal

How long does reinstatement take?

Google does not publish a timeline. It says only that it will review the appeal and email a decision. In practice a clean, well-evidenced first appeal usually comes back inside a couple of weeks, and messy ones or periods when Google is running a suspension wave take considerably longer. Plan for the phone to be quiet for at least a fortnight and do not build the month's cashflow around a fast answer.

What if my appeal is rejected?

You have one more self-service attempt, so treat a rejection as information rather than a verdict. Re-read the guidelines against your profile honestly, find the thing you were defending that you should have changed, change it, then appeal again with stronger documents. If the rejection is clearly wrong, the Google Business Profile community forum is where product experts pick up cases that the automated review gets wrong.

How do I stop it happening again?

  • Change one significant field at a time, and leave a few weeks between changes.
  • Before any name change, record the trading name on your NZBN and get it onto signage and invoices. New Zealand has no DBA register, so that paperwork trail is your only evidence. There is more on this in how to change your Google Business Profile name safely.
  • Keep a folder with current photos of the signage, a recent invoice and a recent utility bill, so an appeal takes an hour rather than a week.
  • Never open a profile at an address you do not genuinely operate from. In trades, someone will report it.
