How to Add a Second Location to Your Google Business Profile

How to Add a Second Location to Your Google Business Profile

Key takeaways

  • You can have as many profiles as you have genuine locations. The limit is premises you can prove, not an account setting.
  • Proximity is one of the biggest ranking factors, so a single pin cannot cover a spread-out city no matter how good it is.
  • In New Zealand this argument really only holds in Auckland. Most other cities are tight enough that one strong profile plus suburb pages reaches the whole market.
  • An unstaffed address gets reported by competitors and suspended, and in trades it will be reported.

You can have more than one Google Business Profile, as many as you have genuine, staffed locations, and you add one from the Business Profile manager by choosing Add business and then creating a new location under the same account. The constraint has never been the account. It is whether you can prove the premises are real when Google or a competitor checks.

The reason to bother is proximity. A single pin ranks strongly within a few kilometres of where it sits and fades quickly beyond that, which is why a business can be number one in its own suburb and invisible two suburbs over.

Can I have more than one Google Business Profile?

Yes. Multi-location businesses are a normal, supported case: chains, franchises and trades with real branches all run several profiles from one account. What is not supported is several profiles for one location, or profiles at addresses that exist only to hold a pin. Those are duplicates or spam, and both get removed.

How do I add a second location?

  1. In the Business Profile manager, choose Add business, then Add single business.
  2. Give it the location's own name following the same pattern as your main profile, its own address, and its own phone number.
  3. Set the categories for that location, which are usually the same as your main profile.
  4. Request verification. For a second trade location this is normally video verification: a continuous recording showing the signage, the street, the inside of the premises and evidence you operate there, such as tools, stock or paperwork.
  5. Once it is live, build it out properly. A half-empty second profile ranks like a half-empty first one.

What does Google need to verify a second location?

Premises you can walk into, signage on the door with the business name on it, and someone there at least some of the time. Video verification is deliberately hard to fake: you will be asked to move continuously from the street sign to the premises to proof of the business operating inside.

Will a second profile hurt my first one?

Not if both are legitimate and distinct. They need different addresses, different phone numbers, and ideally different tracked numbers so you can see which location is producing. What does cause harm is two profiles that are really the same business in the same place, which Google treats as duplicates. If that has already happened, the fix is in how to merge duplicate Google Business Profiles.

What does a second location actually cost to run?

This is the part that gets skipped, and it is what decides whether the move is worth making. A second profile is not a free pin, it is a small overhead that has to be covered by the work it brings in.

  • Premises. A shared office, a desk in a serviced building, or a small unit, at whatever that costs in the suburb you are targeting.
  • Signage, which is not optional. It is what verification and any competitor report will look for.
  • A separate tracked phone number, so you can see what the location produces rather than guessing.
  • Someone there some of the time. Unstaffed is the single most reported and most suspended pattern.
  • The same profile work again: categories, services, photos of that location, and its own review flow.

Set against that, a trade with a high job value only needs a little to clear it. Roofing is the clearest case: at a typical New Zealand reroof value, one or two jobs a year from a second profile covers the location for the year. For a business doing small call-outs, the arithmetic is much tighter.

How do I manage several profiles without doubling the work?

Run them from one Business Profile manager account rather than separate logins, so you can see them together and nothing gets orphaned when a staff member leaves. Keep the details deliberately consistent: the same name pattern, the same categories, the same services wording, with only the address, phone number and local photos differing.

Then run the review flow per location. A second profile with no reviews of its own will not hold a ranking, and reviews cannot be moved between profiles later, so start asking the moment it is verified.

When is a second profile worth it in New Zealand?

Less often than American advice suggests, because the geography is different. A US metro can be sixty kilometres across with a million people in each quadrant. Most New Zealand cities are not.

MarketDoes one pin cover it?What to do first
AucklandNo. Too spread out for a single pin to reach Albany and PapakuraA second, genuinely staffed location once the first profile is maxed out
Wellington, ChristchurchMostly, with effortStrengthen the one profile and build service plus suburb pages
Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, NapierYesOne strong profile. A second location is rarely the bottleneck
Rural and provincialYes, easilyReviews and pages, not more pins

The honest sequence is that a second profile is a later move, not a first one. Get the name, categories, services, photos and reviews right on the profile you already have, build out the pages that support it, and only then add a location. Doing it in the other order usually produces two mediocre profiles instead of one good one.

If the problem is that you rank at home and nowhere else, start with why you rank in one suburb and vanish in the next.
