Where Your Business Address Should Be to Rank on Google Maps

Where Your Business Address Should Be to Rank on Google Maps

Key takeaways

  • Search volume inside a metro is concentrated, not spread evenly, so where your pin sits decides what you can reach.
  • Let the top five ranking competitors show you the profitable zone before you sign a lease.
  • Verification has tightened: real signage, a real fit-out and a proper video walkthrough.
  • Citations do nothing until they are indexed, which is why they often appear not to work.

Most advice about ranking on Google Maps starts with the website or the reviews. Neither is the first constraint. The first constraint is the address on your profile, because local results are proximity weighted and the pin decides how far you can reach before you optimise a single other thing.

A restoration company that got this right reached number one in 60 days and produced $120,000 in new revenue, with no ads and no referrals. The full playbook is in the video.

Search volume is concentrated, not spread

If a keyword has 400 searches a month across a metro, those searches are not spread evenly over the map. The large majority come from the dense, populated parts of the city, and the rest is scraps.

So a business based 45 minutes out of town is competing for searches it physically cannot reach. Lovely place to live, poor place to put the pin.

Let your competitors choose the zone

Open Maps, search the exact term you want to rank for, and look at the top five pins together rather than one at a time. They map out a shape: a ring, a cluster, a line. The middle of that shape is the zone Google is already rewarding.

Taking an office eight miles outside it because the rent is 20% cheaper caps your ceiling before you start. A small unit in a shared building is a few hundred a month in most metros, and that is the cost of admission.

Verification, the way it works now

Google has been hit hard by spam and has tightened verification a long way. Put real signage inside and on the door, fit the room out so it is obvious a business operates there, then record the walkthrough they ask for: the signage outside, walking in, unlocking the unit with a key, then the office itself.

It is common for the first attempt to be rejected and the second to pass. If it gets messy there are routes to a live video call with a reviewer instead.

The name field does more than anything else on the listing

Google cannot cleanly separate someone searching for a service from someone searching for a business, so a name that matches the query sits in both pools at once. Read ten ranking listings in your market, find the pattern in how they structure their names, then file a DBA so the name is legitimately yours and build citations under it.

One restoration client had more than 200 reviews, more than any competitor, and still ranked below them. After the name change they moved into the top three and closed a $50,000 job within four weeks.

Citations, and the step everyone skips

Aim for 30 to 50 citations, a mix of the big directories and the ones specific to your trade, with your name, address and phone number identical everywhere.

The part most people miss is indexing. A citation page that Google has not indexed does nothing at all, which is why citation packages often feel like money down the drain. Getting those pages indexed is what turns them into a ranking signal.

Then the site and the reviews

The profile wins the map pack, the website gives Google the context to trust it, and reviews that name the job and the suburb move the searches that produce work. That order matters: fixing the site first while the pin is in the wrong place is the most common expensive mistake in local SEO.
