How Long Local SEO Really Takes: What to Expect in 90 Days

Key takeaways

  • Competition, your starting point and your website decide how fast local SEO moves.
  • Competitive areas usually take three to six months, and nobody can guarantee rankings.
  • The first 90 days should cover tracking, fixes, new pages, then measuring and adjusting.

It's the first question nearly every trade business asks: how long until this works? The honest answer is that it depends. That isn't a cop-out if you know what it depends on.

Here is what drives the timeline, what a realistic range looks like and what should actually happen in your first 90 days.

What decides how fast you'll see results

Local SEO timelines vary a lot from one business to the next. The main factors are:

  • Competition: a plumber in a big city is up against more established businesses than one in a regional town
  • Your starting point: an existing profile with reviews and a decent website moves faster than a brand new business
  • Your website: if it needs rebuilding, that adds time before the SEO work can do its job
  • Reviews: Google's documentation says prominence is one of the main factors in local results, and reviews feed into it
  • How much you want to rank for: one service in one town is quicker than ten services across a whole region

Seasonality plays a part as well. A roofer's enquiries can swing with the weather regardless of rankings, which is why tracking over months tells you more than judging a single week.

Anyone who gives you an exact date without looking at these things is guessing.

A realistic range

In less competitive areas, you can often see meaningful movement within a couple of months. For competitive areas, it usually takes three to six months, and holding top positions across a wide service area can take longer.

Some businesses move faster. Tuffnell Plumbing in Nelson reached the Google Maps top three within 60 days of a rebuild. Rent2Own Cabins in New Zealand had 60+ monthly leads within 60 days of launching their first website and SEO strategy.

Those are good outcomes, not promises. Nobody can guarantee rankings, because nobody controls Google.

It helps to separate rankings from results. Rankings often move before the phone does, and calls tend to follow once you're consistently showing up for the searches that matter.

Days 1 to 30: fix the foundations

The first month is about finding what's broken and fixing it. You probably won't notice much change in the phone yet, but this is where later results come from.

  1. Set up call and form tracking so every enquiry can be traced back to its source
  2. Record baseline rankings across the suburbs you service, not just from your office
  3. Audit your Google Business Profile, website and main competitors
  4. Fix profile categories, services, service areas and business details
  5. Agree on the priority services and areas to target first

If an agency skips tracking and baseline rankings, you'll have no way of knowing later whether anything improved. You should also know who is doing the work and how you'll hear about progress.

Days 31 to 60: build what's missing

With the foundations sorted, the second month is about building. That usually means new or improved service pages, useful area pages for your key suburbs and a review process that runs on every job. If you're not sure why the pages matter, read why a single services page is costing you jobs.

It also means starting to earn local links and mentions, and cleaning up old or inconsistent listings across directories. Don't expect every new page to perform straight away. Pages take time to be found and trusted, and some will need a second pass.

By now you should be seeing early signs, such as better rankings in the suburbs closest to your base, more profile views or more people finding your site through search.

Days 61 to 90: measure, adjust and push further

The third month is when you look hard at the data. Which pages are getting traction? Which suburbs have improved on your rank grid? Which calls came from Maps and organic search? From there:

  • Double down on the services and areas that are responding
  • Improve pages that get visitors but not calls
  • Push reviews and local mentions in the areas that are lagging
  • Plan the next set of pages based on what's working

This is also the time to be honest about anything that isn't working. If a service or suburb hasn't moved at all, the plan for it should change, not just carry on.

At the end of 90 days, you should get a clear, plain-English report showing what was done, what moved and what's next. If you can't tell whether you're better off than on day one, have a read of seven signs your SEO agency isn't working.
